Tribute to the first Agricultural Engineers graduated fifty years ago from the Universidad de Nariño 1967 - 2017.

In the beginning, the ITA operated in the Convent of the Capuchin Fathers in the city of Pasto, which provided their old facilities so that the Universidad de Nariño could adapt them to the demands required for the operation of the new academic unit. In fact, it was necessary to make adjustments to old rooms that had been dormitories, offices, and classrooms to install new chemistry, biology, physics, and engineering laboratories, libraries, classrooms, professors' offices, administrative offices, and cafeterias.

The provision of a library, newspaper archive, and laboratories was gradual and progressive, but thanks to the quality and enthusiasm of the professors who gradually came to the new academic unit, it was possible to meet the demands and needs of the academic programs of that time.

It is important to highlight the great human and scientific qualities of the first professors, some of whom were from Pasto, among whom we can mention: Doctor Luis Eduardo Mora Osejo, Botanist graduated in Germany who was the first dean of ITA and later rector of the University of Nariño; Doctor Luciano Mora Osejo, Mathematician graduated in Germany; Carlos López Pabón, Chemical Engineer; Guillermo Regalado, Civil Engineer; Braulio Montenegro, Chemical Engineer; Javier Esparza Duque, Agricultural Engineer and Phytopathologist. Some foreign professionals who initially provided their academic services were the Spanish Federico Povedano, Mathematician and Melchor Pozueco, Zootechnician, and the Bolivian Agronomist Guillermo Avila.

The first Agronomists who graduated from the Universidad de Nariño were called to work in different companies of the agrarian sector, such as the Colombian Institute for Agrarian Reform - INCORA, the Caja Agraria, and the Instituto Geográfico Agustín Codazi - IGAC. It is also important to highlight that six professionals joined FACIA as Assistant Professors: Olga Salazar de Benavides, Segundo Benavides Cabrera, Edmundo Cerón Ramírez, José Ovidio Zúñiga Rúales, Gerardo López Jurado and Edgar Luna Torres, professionals who later pursued postgraduate studies and provided great service in teaching and research.

Another important aspect to highlight is that the first professionals obtained excellent and thorough training in the basic principles of agronomy that enabled them to become excellent professionals, to such an extent that several excelled nationally and internationally in fields such as flower production, soil research, and rural development. These achievements were made despite the limitations of an academic program that was only the beginning.

For those of us who were part of the first graduating class of agricultural engineers from the Universidad de Nariño, it was a very important decision to start a new training process and a huge challenge that we set out to overcome. Currently, seeing the degree of development that has reached the Universidad de Nariño and the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences in particular, both quantitatively as well as academically and scientifically, and remembering the history of the last fifty years, we are very pleased to have achieved a title that honors us and fills us with pride. It has been an honor to be a professional graduate in the first class of agricultural engineers of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences of the Universidad de Nariño.
