LAS PIRAMIDES FINANCIERAS: SOPORTE DE UNA ECONOMIA ATIPICA

Abstract

This article pretends to explain the process of formation and operation of financial pyramids, in what moment they collapse and how its decline affects a normal economy, with its structural and socioeconomical consequences. A brief contemporary review is made on the origin of pyramids to understand that this phenomenon is not new and that at different times they have penetrated in some economic systems of Europe and the United States. Then, its explain the impossibility of which this system of swindle works in the long term. Finally, it is described what it has happened in Colombia during the last threemonths of 2008 to conclude that, although the financial pyramids can promote the economic activity, it do not represent the formal structure of the economy, with as it is considered that they do not constitute a pillar of the same one.
