The interest of the study is to measure the degree of socioeconomic modernization of the department of Nariño and its subregions through the comparison of the structures of the population by sex and age of intercensal period 1993 - 2005, the population pyramid superposition and the demographic calculation of some rates and indicators. The analysis is framed within the theory of the demographic transition that it indicates that the population behaviors as the natality, mortality and the population increase, are associate to processes of socioeconomic transformation.
The results show that Nariño has initiated a process of demographic transition evidenced by the gradual reduction of the rates of mortality, the maintenance of the rates of natality and an increase of the volume of the population.
At level of the subregions, is reported that the most advanced in this process is the Central region, marked by its urban character, and the most backward region is the Pacific, because in the last twelve years, have not happened greater demographic transformations, which lets see its difficulties in the execution of policies of economic development, political and social.
Finally, the study indicates that in the regions Western Center, North and South, a process of transition has begun characterized by the diminution of the young population and by the increase of the life expectancies of the senile population.
