The paper presents a general description of the current state of the milk industry in Colombia and in the region concerning this industry at Nariño. The possible consequences of the implementation of the Free Trade Agreement with the United States for this important part of the economy will also be discussed. The fundamental considerations for this analysis are the indicators that determine the competitiveness of the milk industry of Colombia and Nariño, the contingents assigned to each country, the terms of agreement settled for the free trade of milk products, and the potential strengths of Colombian products. Other elements used in the analysis are the problems and difficulties that are currently limiting productivity in Nariño and the challenges that are to be faced by all participants of the milk industry as a consequence of the Free Trade Agreement.Downloads
