Abstract

This article discusses the relevance and accuracy of teaching economics through university textbooks; in order to do that, this paper has conceptualized the purpose that economic science has and the obstacles it presents in the processes of teaching and learning. The analysis indicates that everywhere people learn about economics using textbooks then, the problem is not the educational material, rather is because it is not adapted to the local context where it is taught. When textbooks are not adapted to the local necessities generates difficulties such as epistemological and pedagogical barriers which complicate the process of understanding the economic science. Teaching economics based on textbooks requires more deductive logic because it gives to the student clues and data in order to interpret the enigma. This article inquiry which will be the right way to teach economics in the undeveloped countries because textbooks explain economic theories and concepts based on industrial countries; however, economic science is worldwide taught at the same way, therefore, anyone who wants to learn it has to go through that process. At the end, the article states it does not matter what kind of material is used for teaching which is important is to point out the problems that economic theories are related to developed countries and acknowledging will avoid future problems not only in learning but also in using those theories and concepts in a different context where textbooks were written.
