Organizational climate as a risk factor for Burnout Syndrome among workers in a home healthcare institution in Colombia, 2023

Abstract

Introduction: Burnout syndrome is a growing risk in home healthcare services, where high emotional demands and limited institutional support foster professional burnout.

Objective: To analyze organizational climate as a risk factor for burnout syndrome among workers at a home healthcare institution in Colombia, 2023.

Methods: Quantitative, cross-sectional, correlational study with full census coverage (N = 143 workers). The MBI-HSS and the EDCO Organizational Climate Survey, both validated for Spanish-speaking contexts, were administered. Analysis included Spearman correlations and multiple linear regression with verification of model assumptions.

Results: 17,5% of workers met the strict three-dimensional criterion for full burnout syndrome; 37,8% showed elevated emotional exhaustion as an independent indicator. Organizational climate correlated significantly with all three burnout dimensions (rho between −0,376 and 0,347; p < 0,001). Regression models were globally significant (p < 0,001, R² between 0,20 and 0,21), with organizational climate as the only statistically significant predictor; sociodemographic variables were non-significant across all models.

Conclusion: Organizational climate operates as an independent protective factor against burnout in home healthcare workers. Improving perceived compensation, job stability, and managerial clarity is a priority strategy to reduce professional burnout and strengthen the quality of home-based care.
