Introduction: The National Survey of Nutritional Situation in Colombia (ENSIN) constitutes the main statistical benchmark regarding the population's nutritional status, providing key data to guide research and support public health policies.
Objective: To characterize the scientific productions derived from ENSIN, identifying research themes, analyzed nutritional indicators, and knowledge gaps reported in the literature.
Materials and methods: A narrative review was conducted across PubMed, Scopus, LILACS, and Google Scholar (2005–2025) following SANRA guidelines. The protocol was previously registered on the Open Science Framework platform.
Results: A total of 53 scientific publications derived from ENSIN were identified. Dietary intake emerged as one of the most studied indicators with 15 articles (18.2%), overweight and obesity with 16 (19.5%), and physical activity with 9 (10.9%). Meanwhile, 4 articles individually addressed a single indicator each — vitamin D, vitamin A, zinc, and height deficit (1.1% each) — whereas the remaining 9 publications analyzed various secondary epidemiological topics, revealing significant thematic gaps.
Conclusion: Scientific production based on ENSIN reflects an uneven and inefficient utilization of this dataset, concentrating heavily on a few indicators while leaving multiple thematic areas underused. Optimizing the comprehensive use of this scientific data will foster the generation of robust evidence to guide future research and inform public policies regarding national nutrition.
