The aim of this study was to evaluate the behavior of serum bile acids in hepatobiliary disease and the potential usefulness for the differential diagnosis of cholestasis (intrahepatic and extrahepatic). were valued serum bile acids, bi-lirrubinas, aminotransferases (AST and ALT), alkaline phosphatase (FA), glutamiltranspeptidase gamma (GGT), total cholesterol (T Col), total protein and albumin in 100 patients diagnosed by clinical and pathologically with cholestasis. We also evaluate the parameters listed above in 100 healthy individuals. Because the clinical characteristics of patients, they weren classified into two groups. Group 1 included individuals diagnosed with intrahepatic cholestasis and group II with extrahepatic cholestasis. The first exhibited marked increases in serum bile acids, bilirubin, FMD, AST, ALT and GGT. In group II showed slight increase in bile acids, bilirubin, AST and ALT, GGT and the FA showed marked increases. Both groups showed the total normal protein and cholesterol , in contrast, showed decreased albumin. Statistically significant differences were observed in concentrations of serum bile acids in the study group (healthy vs colestasis; vs intrahepatic cholestasis, Extrahepatic cholestasis).
