Education of women in Pasto: from silence to speech

This article is part of a broader research entitled “Women and the Nation in the South of Colombia: Pasto, 1904 - 1960 “; an examination of the education that young women received in educational institutions in the region. Of special interest is the pedagogical discourse that circulated in the Female Normal School of the city of Pasto since its creation in 1906 until 1932, the year it was closed. The school was responsible for the training of teachers for the southern region of the country. The article examines the relationship between institutional discourse and social discourse on the meaning of the role women should play, as education implemented a mono-discourse which became hegemonic regarding the role of women as wives and mothers, at a time in which the feminist leaders proposed substantial changes in the domestic appointment of Colombian women.
