Abstract

This article is based on the hypothesis that Colombian universities are not in position to respond to their academic, scientific, social and cultural functions. Our objective is to show that universities face a conflict between an integral formation (scientific, ethical and humanistic) and an education centered on economic growth. This work also explores some of the current and historical circumstances that prevent the fulfillment of those functions. The applied methodology was based on a hermeneutic (interpretative) approach, understood as an analytical and rational reconstruction of a knowledge that enables a critical and emancipatory self-reflection, through a documentary study and a challenge of the consulted sources. Here, the main proposal is that the raison d’être of the university, in harmony with its tradition, is to form reasonable individuals characterized by: (i) attempting to articulate the primary reason (intuitive, emotive) with the secondary reason (formal, deliberative); (ii) having a plural and dogmatic attitude; (iii) displaying a listening ability; and (iv) exercising caring for him/herself and others. The article concludes with some considerations regarding the proposed method to achieve that purpose, which is employing a teaching approach based on dialogue and individual and shared experiences and without prejudices.
